Don Roberts
Boxing Instructor
Don's first martial art was Tae Kwon Do at a young age. Initially taught by his step dad, he didn't start in an actual academy until he was 14 or so. He also took Wing Chun during this time, but stopped after a month because he didn't feel the style was hard enough for him. Being young, he wanted to meet force with force. Now he realizes the differences and usefulness of soft styles.
When he was 18, Don first found boxing. He got hooked on the sport after watching Julio Cezar Chavez fight Meldrick Taylor. When Mike Tyson came along, he fell deeper into the "Sweet Science." He stopped traditional martial arts completely and focused only on boxing. He trained mostly at his home until he was about 22 or 23, when he found a gym to attend.
Don won 2 state championships and 1 regional championship, and got to the Semi-Finals of the Nationals, as an amateur. During this time, he fought a couple of guys that have made it to the top as well as a couple who got very close to the top. His most notable victory was a 47-second first round stoppage of Jeff "Left Hook" Lacey. Lacey bounced back from that loss to become a world champion at 168 lbs. (Super Middle Weight). Don also fought Hector Camacho Jr., Rhoshi Wells, and David Estrada, all of which became top contenders. Don also competed in club fights, accumulating a record of 47 victories with 0 defeats.
Turning pro was a difficult decision for Don because the P.A.L. (Police Athletic League) head coach didn't want him to turn pro because the Olympics were coming up. The coach felt like Don had the ability and work ethic to challenge for a position on the US Olympic boxing team. Don, however, was tired of the politics of amateur boxing and wanted to move forward. He left the P.A.L. and ended up training on his own in his back yard until he was 30. This is when he started fighting in the club fights around Jacksonville.
During this time, a friend of Don's named Nate Campbell saw him fight. Nate was a professional boxer already and had accumulated a record of 9 wins with 0 losses, with all of his wins by KO. Later on, he ended up holding 3 titles and fought on HBO and Showtime.
Nate got Don his first two pro fights through his connections in the boxing world, but Don had little guidance in selecting what fights would be good fights for him. His record suffered as a result. But this experience taught Don valuable lessons in fighter management and selecting fights.
Robert Daluz, a kid that Don met at the club fights, was the first boxer that Don trained. Since that time, Robert has fought on the undercards of many of Roy Jones Jr.'s fights that were shown on Showtime.
Don is well known in the area as one of the top boxing coaches and he continues to work hard as improving himself in all aspects of boxing.
