Okinawa Kenpo Karate, like Judo, was originally developed by Shigeru Nakamura to be a sport martial art utilizing a combination of traditional techniques such as "katas" (forms), and modern training methods (in the early to mid-20th century) to produce a more effective self-defense system. Known for his use of "bogu gear" for hard contact sparring, Nakamura first started using the term "Okinawa Kenpo" to describe his style when he established his own dojo in Nago City in 1953. After Nakamura's death in 1969, Seikichi Odo was appointed the Master of Okinawa Kenpo Karate. As he was very skilled in the traditional weapons of Okinawan martial arts, Master Odo added them to the curriculum of Okinawa Kenpo and changed the name of the martial art to "Okinawa Kenpo Karate-Kobudo." The karate taught at Smiley's Combat Athletix is based on the original Okinawa Kenpo created by Shigeru Nakamura and emphasizes the hard contact sport aspect of the martial art while also focusing on self-defense. Mr. Smiley has also added techniques and strategies from the other martial arts that he studied in order to create a more well-rounded form of self-defense. Equipment required is a white karate gi (uniform), obi (belt), sparring gear (headgear, hand protection, and foot protection), mouthpiece, and groin protection.
